Can Sergers Sew Knits? What They Do Best
A T-shirt seam that pops the first time you pull it is usually not a fabric problem. It is a stitch problem. So, can sergers sew knits? Absolutely. A serger, often called an overlocker in the UK, is one of the most useful machines for sewing stretch fabric because it stitches, trims and finishes the seam in one pass.
For jersey tops, leggings, swimwear, children's clothes and many activewear projects, a serger creates the flexible, tidy seams associated with ready-to-wear garments. It does have limits, though. A standard sewing machine still has an important place at the cutting table, especially for hems, topstitching, zips and detail work.
Can Sergers Sew Knits Without Stretching Them Out?
Yes, provided the machine is threaded correctly and set up for the fabric in front of you. The key feature is differential feed. Sergers use two sets of feed dogs, with the front and rear sections moving at adjustable rates. This lets the machine feed a stretchy knit evenly instead of pulling it into a wavy, stretched-out seam.
For most stable jerseys, start with differential feed at the normal setting, often 1.0, and sew a test seam. If the seam ripples or the fabric edge looks lettuce-like, increase the differential feed slightly. If the seam bunches or puckers, lower it. The right setting is not universal: a firm cotton jersey, slippery rayon knit and bulky sweatshirt fleece behave very differently.
Avoid pulling the fabric from behind the presser foot. Let the serger feed it through while you guide the edge gently. A small amount of support is useful with light or drapey fabric, but tension on the fabric can defeat even a well-adjusted differential feed.
The Best Serger Stitches for Knit Fabric
A four-thread overlock is the most practical everyday choice for knit garment construction. It uses two needles and two loopers to produce a secure seam with built-in stretch. This is the stitch to choose for shoulder seams, side seams, sleeves, pyjamas, joggers and children's clothing when you want a durable finish.
A three-thread overlock uses one needle and is lighter and less structural. It works well for neatening raw edges, finishing seam allowances or sewing less stressed areas. It can also be useful on very lightweight knits where a four-thread seam feels too bulky.
A narrow three-thread stitch, sometimes described as a rolled or narrow overlock depending on the settings, can suit lingerie, mesh and fine knit edges. It takes more testing, particularly where the fabric is prone to curling. For seams that need to be strong and elastic, however, the four-thread overlock remains the reliable starting point.
If your machine offers a coverstitch function, it expands what you can do with knits. Coverstitch is commonly used for T-shirt hems, neckbands, cuffs and activewear hems because it leaves parallel rows of stitching on the right side and a stretchy looper finish underneath. A combination overlocker/coverstitch machine can be excellent value for garment makers, but remember that changing between functions may take more time than using separate machines.
Set Up Your Serger for Better Knit Seams
Successful sewing starts before the foot pedal. Cut a few scraps from the actual fabric and test every adjustment on them. A knit's fibre content, weight and recovery all affect its behaviour, even when two fabrics look similar on the shelf.
Use good-quality polyester overlocking thread for most projects. It has enough give for stretch seams and is available in cones that suit the higher thread use of a serger. Four matching cones are neat, but they are not essential. For a standard four-thread seam, use matching thread in the needles, which show most on the garment exterior, and coordinate the looper threads where practical.
Choose the correct needles for the knit. Ballpoint or stretch needles are designed to pass between knit fibres rather than cutting through them. A skipped-stitch issue is often solved by fitting fresh stretch needles, checking that they are fully inserted, and rethreading the machine in the correct order. Follow your machine manual closely, as the looper and needle threading sequence matters.
Set the cutting width so the blades remove only the amount needed to create a clean edge. Cutting too much can make a garment smaller than intended, especially on close-fitting patterns. Cutting too little may leave loose loops at the edge. Test, inspect the seam and adjust one setting at a time.
When a Sewing Machine Is Still the Better Tool
A serger is brilliant at seams, but it is not a complete replacement for a conventional sewing machine. You will usually use a sewing machine for basting, stay stitching, understitching facings, inserting zips, sewing buttonholes and adding precise topstitching. A stretch stitch, narrow zigzag or lightning stitch gives useful flexibility when a serger cannot reach the area comfortably.
Hems are the most common example. A twin needle on a regular sewing machine gives a classic double-row T-shirt hem, while a coverstitch machine delivers a more commercial finish. A serger can make a rolled hem, which looks lovely on lightweight jersey or dancewear, but that is a different result from a conventional turned-up hem.
Sergers are also less forgiving when you need to unpick. Overlock stitches can be removed, but it takes patience. For an unfamiliar pattern, some makers sew fit-sensitive seams first on a standard machine with a long stitch, check the fit, then finish or construct with the serger once they are confident.
Common Knit Sewing Problems and Quick Fixes
Wavy seams generally point to excess stretch as the fabric passes through the machine. Raise the differential feed, reduce presser-foot pressure if your model allows it, and make sure you are not pulling the fabric. Some fine knits also benefit from a strip of wash-away stabiliser or lightweight seam tape in areas such as shoulder seams.
Puckering may mean the differential feed is set too high, the needle tension is too tight or the needle is unsuitable. Check the needle first, then test a small tension adjustment. Change only one variable at a time so you can see what corrected the problem.
Skipped stitches often occur with highly elastic fabrics such as swimwear, performance knit or ribbing. Fit a new stretch needle, check threading, and test a slightly different needle size. If the thread breaks, inspect the thread path, make sure the cones are seated properly and clean lint from the looper area. Sergers produce lint quickly, particularly with brushed fleece and cotton-rich jersey.
Loose loops hanging over the fabric edge usually mean the stitch width or looper tension needs attention. If loops pull to the top, adjust the upper looper; if they pull underneath, adjust the lower looper. Your manual's tension diagram is the quickest reference, and a labelled test swatch saves repeated guesswork later.
Choosing a Serger for Knit Projects
For most home garment makers, look for a machine with four-thread overlock capability and adjustable differential feed. These two features cover the majority of knit construction. Colour-coded threading guides, an accessible looper area, a built-in needle threader and a free arm can make regular use far easier, particularly for beginners.
A two/three/four-thread serger offers flexibility for seams and edge finishes. If you make a high volume of knitwear or want professional-looking hems, consider whether a dedicated coverstitch machine or a combination model suits your workflow. Separate machines cost more and take more space, but they avoid the interruption of converting one machine between overlock and coverstitch settings.
